After Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro received widespread criticism over protecting the Amazon rainforest, Ireland and France became concerned and threatened to veto the deal if the Brazilian government did not act.  In July 2019, a symbolic motion to reject the trade agreement was passed by 84 votes to 46 in Dáil Éireann, the lower house of the Irish legislature.  On 8 August 2019, the Luxembourg Minister of Trade indicated that the implementation of the Paris Climate Agreement was a necessary condition for the signing of the EU-Mercosur trade agreement.  On August 28, Slovak Agriculture Minister Gabriela Matecna said Slovakia would block the deal because of Brazil`s unacceptable management of the Amazon fires.  In September 2019, members of the Austrian Parliament`s subcommittee voted almost unanimously to reject the draft free trade agreement citing concerns about their domestic agricultural sector and the forest fires in the Amazon. . . .
